FAQ

What age do you need to be to join?
16 years and upwards.

Do I need to be able to kayak / paddle to join?
A basic competency in paddling is necessary (i.e. be able to paddle 5km, have the ability to launch, self-rescue, remount craft from either side in moderately rough, deep water). It is also necessary to be able to swim at least 100m in open water without a PFD (personal flotation device).

For basic paddlecraft instruction, we recommend a course with Copper Coast Adventures or Pure Adventure in Graignemanagh.

We train weekly in the sea at Tramore (April – November). We compete in national and international races, organise our own races and events and promote the sport at a local level.

EQUIPMENT QUESTIONS

See our guide for buying a boat of your own

See our guide for choosing the right paddles

Do I need my own equipment?
The club owns a number of entry level surfskis which are available to members for club training sessions. Along with these surfskis, we also have a range of paddles. You will need your own PFD and a wetsuit or suitable watersports attire.

I own a kayak already, is it suitable?
We paddle offshore, often in ocean swell and wind. Wider shorter sit-on-tops, are unsuitable for this type of paddling. We recommend a surfski, sea kayak or racing SUP. It is possible to use one of the club’s surfskis during training sessions. SUPs need to be solid and designed for offshore paddling, not inflatable (iSUPS).

What personal equipment do I need?
A PFD (Personal flotation device) suitable for paddlesports
A wetsuit / suitable watersports attire.
Other recommended safety equipment: leg leash
